Hey Joe — I know this one!!!!

But I will sit out. Sending it to some friends now.

  2. Jeffrey Pinyan

I know this one too. (At least, I know ONE of the OT types, and I could probably guess the second one.) Luke’s use of ἐπισκιάσει here (and in 9:34 at the Transfiguration) is one of my favorite NT-to-OT links.

  3. Bill B (AKA Theocoid)

Hannah in 1 Samuel 1 is usually connected with this passage, but Sarah in Gen. 21: 1-2 and Rachel in Gen. 30: 22-24 are often presented as types of Mary. In Sarah’s case, God visits Sarah “and did as He said.” In Rachel’s, God “hearkened to her and opened her womb.” If there are others, I’ll have to go digging a bit more, but it wouldn’t surprise me in the least since the “barren woman” motif is so common.

  4. CatholicHack

    Hi Bill,

Good input on the “barren” women references. Remember what I’m looking for though, under the “Game” section above:

You MUST state 2 (two) different prototypes/verses in the Old Testament that contain a type of our Lady, the Spirit, and the overshadowing, aspects of this verse in St. Luke’s, Gospel.

    Keep digging!

    God Bless You
    Joe

Hmm, the reference that comes to my mind is NOT a person, but is the Ark of the Covenant. Mary is often compared to the ark. The cherubim overshadow the ark, and God descends and dwells within.
    1 Kings 8:6-10
6 And the priests brought in the ark of the covenant of the Lord into its place, into the oracle of the temple, into the holy of holies, under the wings of the cherubims. 7 For the cherubims spread forth their wings over the place of the ark, and covered the ark, and the staves thereof above. 8 And whereas the staves stood out, the ends of them were seen without, in the sanctuary before the oracle, but were not seen farther out, and there they have been unto this day. 9 Now in the ark there was nothing else but the two tables of stone, which Moses put there at Horeb, when the Lord made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt. 10 And it came to pass, when the priests had come out of the sanctuary, that a cloud filled the house of the Lord, 11 and the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud: for the glory of the Lord had filled the house of the Lord.

    and my second guess is
Sarah. First the angels came and announced the birth of her son:
    Gen 18:9-10
And when they had eaten, they said to him: Where is Sara your wife? He answered: Lo she is in the tent. 10 And he said to him: I will return and come to you at this time, life accompanying, and Sara, your wife, shall have a son.

then, she miraculously conceived despite her old age Gen. 21:1-2
nd the Lord visited Sara, as he had promised: and fulfilled what he had spoken. 2 And she conceived and bore a son in her old age, at the time that God had foretold her.

    Good work Milehimama!

The first is right on; I would only add that it was the Shekinah Glory cloud that overshadowed, and came upon, the Ark instead of the cherubim who are looming large on the walls of the sanctuary.

The second one is good, but doesn’t quite fit the bill. Remember we need all the elements: the Spirit, the type of Mary, and the overshadowing, or coming up, or moving over the type. Keep digging, your half way there!

    God Bless You
    Joe

I like Rachel as a type (with her “overshadowing” her dad’s idols, the “manner of women” could mirror the Spirit, etc.), but I don’t think it fits your criteria. I assume Noah’s ark acts in a similar manner to the ark of the Tabernacle, and to the Tent of Moed…

  8. David Mason

1Kings 8:6-10 is reference to the OT Ark (NT Mary) that the Shekinah Glory cloud overshadowed the Ark (previously submitted).
My second one is Ex 40:35 where the cloud overshadowed the Tabernacle, making it
    God’s dwelling place in Israel.

  9. David Mason

1 Kings 8:6-10 reference to the OT Ark (NT Mary) that the Shekinah Glory Cloud overshadowed the Ark (previously submitted).

My second one is Ex 40:35 the the cloud overshadowed the Tabernacle, making
it God’s dwelling place in Israel.

  10. Roy Ornelas

    Hey Joe,
A Friend of mine was trying to input his answers on here but he kept getting error messages. I advised him to email you directly.

  11. CatholicHack

WE HAVE A WINNER Congratulations David Mason!!!

You are right! In 1 Kings 8:6-10 we see the Spirit, the Ark of the Covenant, and the overshadowing; all of which point to our Lady as the Ark of the NEW Covenant. The same is true for Ex. 40:35.

BONUS: There is still ANOTHER prototype that fits this criteria… its not as obvious but it is profound. I will send out a SECOND set of the prize to the one who can name it. Remember, we need all 3 criteria, the Spirit, the Type of Mary, and the overshadowing.

Let me give you a hint: Mary is a type of the Church; right? The Church is the bride of Christ, which is described as the “New Jerusalem”, by way of the new temple, coming down out of heaven in Rev. 21. So, Mary is a type of the Temple, which as we saw from the 1 Kings & Exodus fits perfectly. If that’s the case, then the temple was a prototype of the Mary, who will possess the very presence of God within her womb, then we can look for images of the Temple, that also posses the Spirit, and the Overshadowing, that might shed additional light on Mary in St Luke’s Gospel. Another hint…. you will not find this prototype in either Exodus or the books of the Kings. Good Luck!

  12. Milehimama

    2 Chron 5:13-14
Then the temple of the LORD was filled with a cloud, 14 and the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the temple of God.

Is this also a foreshadowing for the passing away of the Old Covenant and Levitical priesthood?

  13. CatholicHack

Very good try Milehimama but, the one I’m after is found in the Pentateuch. I can tell you it will not be as obvious as the Glory Cloud coming upon, or overshadowing, or filling, the Sanctuary. This one requires a bit more digging but, the elements are all there.

  14. Milehimama

Still curious if the Chron. verse is a foreshadowing of the passing away of the Levitical priesthood, though!

  15. CatholicHack

    2 Chron. 5: 13 & 14

[13] and it was the duty of the trumpeters and singers to make themselves heard in unison in praise and thanksgiving to the LORD), and when the song was raised, with trumpets and cymbals and other musical instruments, in praise to the LORD, “For he is good,
for his steadfast love endures for ever,”
the house, the house of the LORD, was filled with a cloud,

[14] so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud; for the glory of the LORD filled the house of God.

I’ve not heard of this as a foreshadowing to the passing away of the Levitical priesthood before. Certainty, it does for shadow our Lady, and her conceiving, by the Spirit, our Lord within her womb. I will dig around more on the Priesthood connection and let you know if I find something.

If there is still no winners… I may consider just posting the correct answer.

  17. CatholicHack

Ok, I’ve closed the game… I’ve also answered the bonus prototype in this weeks “Behold The Man” show at :
    http://www.catholichack.com/behold-the-man-no-44-%E2%80%9Cmary-the-temple-and-the-spirit%E2%80%9D/

In a nut shell: Genesis 1: 2 “The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters.”

    How?

To the ancient people of Israel creation was seen as the cosmic temple where the garden was the sanctuary/Holy of Hollies, where God’s presence existed & the High Priest (Adam) conversed with him. This is why you see the vestments of Aaron adorned with the symbols, and precious stones, as well as the Salomon’s Temple adorned with the same precious stones, metals, and garden motifs. The Spirit hovers, comes upon, or overshadows, the waters that bring about the creation and the Man, who has life breathed in him. This man was Adam and his fall would one day be undone by the Last Adam, Jesus; who’s own mother also had the Spirit hover, come upon, or overshadow, her, which brings about the conceiving of HIM and the NEW Creation!

Listen to the “Behold the Man” & the talk from Dr John Bergsma (linked on the show notes) which dives even deeper on the cosmic temple.

Thanks for playing & good work on diving deep!
